Annonce – PhD studentships on Memories of Fiction: An Oral History of Readers’ Life Stories

Two fully-funded PhDs

Please note that the funding body (the Arts and Humanities Research Council) stipulates that the funding is only available to UK or EU citizens who have been resident in the UK for three years by September 2014.

These studentships arise from a three-year project, ‘Memories of Fiction: An Oral History of Readers’ Life Stories’ (led by Dr Shelley Trower, University of Roehampton, and Dr Graham Smith, Royal Holloway, University of London). We are seeking to award two PhD studentships to start 1 October 2014.

The first studentship will investigate memories of childhood reading, working with and contributing to the archive of interviews created by the Memories of Fiction project. This PhD project will relate findings from this local study to existing scholarship on childhood reading and adult memory. It will also consider the relationship between memory and the materiality of the book.

For the second studentship we invite applications which outline a research proposal relating to two or more of the following topics in relation to the overall project theme: memory, reading, oral history, life stories, emotion, book studies, creative writing. We will be particularly interested in proposals addressing memories of reading in adulthood but are also open to other ideas.
